I began designing in 2015 without a defined road map or direction. I’ve still been learning and working professionally for the past seven years. During these years, one thing I’ve learned is that there is no easy way to become a designer.

Anyone can be designer. All it takes is a lot of practice. Everyone tells us that. But, in my opinion, if we do not carefully follow a few stages, the exercise will yield no tangible results. We need to be a little more cautious here. Instead of practicing unconsciously, I’ll give you a few pointers to make it easier.

🎢 The first step is to lay a solid foundation.

Yes, it’s tedious, and we’d rather avoid it. However, it is the basis that will make everything else strong in the end. If you are weak from the start, you may experience discomfort afterwards.

Learning graphic principles, elements, and best practices is the best method to solidify your foundation.

🎨 Second Step: Get to Know Design Tools

You’ll need some tools to back up your fundamental understanding. There is popular design software available, but don’t be daunted by the most up-to-date and sophisticated tool. All except one software will be required for mastery.

Know how to use tools such as the Pen, Curvature, Gradient, Selection, and Shape. These tools are found in all software.

👰 Third Step: Give Up on the Talent Myth

We believe that talent is what makes someone good at something. Nobody becomes a master overnight. Don’t worry if you don’t comprehend everything at first; you can always try harder.

As a Mantra, I want you to remember these two.

a. We are all in charge of our own level of achievement.

If we aren’t particularly excellent at what we do, we must accept responsibility for our situation. It’s also known as self-awareness or the ability to accept.

b. We all have the ability to change things.

You can learn anything since we all have the ability to change, adapt, and evolve.

☮️ Fourth Step: Patience & Discipline

We experience excitement when we begin something new, but we quickly forget or lose interest in it. Why is that? We lack discipline. Our daily habits will eventually shape who we become. As a habit, I used practice and did design every day. My will and knowledge to progress through time emerged through daily 1,2 hour investments in learning and doing.

I won’t tell you how to develop greater discipline and patience; you’ll have to figure it out for yourself.
